Bill was born and raised in Marblehead, Massachusetts. He was artistically inclined from an early age and there was never any doubt as to what he would do in life. After graduating from Marblehead High School, he entered Vesper George School of Art where he met and studied under renowned artists Robert Douglas Hunter, Don Stone, Charles Cooper and others. Stone and Hunter were the most influential artists in Bill's fine arts career Soon after his Vesper George graduation, Bill joined the U.S. Navy. His artistic talent was immediately recognized and he was put to work as a photographer on an aircraft carrier. Following his discharge, he returned to Boston to pursue a career in commercial art. Bill earned a reputation as an outstanding art director and creative director at a number of major ad agencies, including Kenyon & Eckhardt and Hill Holliday Connors Cosmopulos. Besides his “day job” he also enjoyed teaching advertising and design at the Art Institute of Boston as well as fine arts to an adult neighborhood program. But the desire to pursue fine art was always just beneath the surface, and in the early 90's he rekindled his friendship and scholastic relationship with Robert Hunter. With Mr. Hunter's help, Plein Air oil painting (painting outdoors/on site) has become Bill's passion and focus. Post impressionist would best describe his painting style, with muted palette and a soft touch to the brushstroke. His works most typically depict New England seaside, marshes and farmland, but also include street scenes and cityscapes. Bill loves what he does and often goes out of his way to do it. Recently, while painting outdoors, a woman stopped by. She eyed his canvas then stared for a moment at his face. “Say,” she said, “Aren't you the man I saw here last year painting in the rain?” He was. And he still does. |
